New Templates for October + Site Updates

Articles

September was pretty productive! I refactored my Knowledge Base, which is a fancy way of saying "articles that are important for SEO, so they get linked from the footer." Apple finally got its shit together with iOS and made it pretty easy to download videos, and it's always been easy to download videos on Android. I did some linkbuilding to those articles back in the day, so I didn't want to straight-up delete them now that they're a little long in the tooth. With a new (somewhat buried) page to stick archived articles, I could focus on two new articles.

These two articles were written by my SEO team based on some keywords I wanted to target, but I've been doing quite a bit of keyword research the last few months. I still need to work out a better pipeline to use my own day-job (Copy.ai) to produce a few more articles and videos each month.

Quote Category

I've got a lot of "pure" quote video templates in my asset pipeline, but so far I've only released on quote template (with 3 color variations) and a bunch of older templates that have been reworked to support the longer paragraph text. That was enough content to justify building out a new Quotes Category to house all the templates with support for paragraph-length text. I'll continue to add paragraph text to older video templates (2 this month!), but it's good for those to have a shared category.

Video Features

I added a new image feature to the customizer -- "Remove Image." There's been an "image to text" feature there for a few years already, and you could always put in an empty string (" ") to render a completely clear image. That wasn't super obvious, though, and I get 1 or 2 emails a month from people wondering why the Intro Maker logo is in their video.

Intro Maker works on a template system, so any time you skip a customization the renderer falls back to the template placeholder (i.e. my logo).

It would be a nice future improvement to handle this automatically for logos, but currently all images are treated the same. There are a handful of templates with images that can be overridden, but the defaults are designed to be a part of the template. Doing a blanket removal on these would break them, so for now I've just added a button to explicitly remove an image instead of using the placeholder. In the future, I'd like to go back and tag each logo as a logo and then make this a bit more automatic.

it me

IntroCave is a one-person-show operated by Will Hankinson, but it's not 100% accurate to say every word is written by me. Some articles were live on the site when I took over. I hire writers from time to time to work on specific articles. People keep asking me to do guest posts, but I haven't actually seen any relevant submissions yet. "Intro Maker staff" might make a better by-line, but currently that's just me. I've been building digital things for 10+ years now, and some of my favorite projects are posted over at my personal website if you want to take a look!
